Hey! Did you miss me? Through our recently renewed site, I’ll take you to a unique place in our country, which houses treasures of immense value! My visit to this place was a journey back in time with cars… images and feelings of past times. And this place is the Hellenic Motor Museum in the centre of Athens!
The Hellenic Motor Museum contains vehicles which cover a period of one century and not only that! Such as this Bedrock Buggy from “The Flinstones” film. In the Flinstones fantasy version in the prehistoric past, dinosaurs, mammoths and such late creatures co-exist with the barefoot cave-residents who use 21st century technology. This particular…vehicle was obtained by the Museum at auction in Great Britain and “in spite of the effort it needed to pass the Roadworthiness Test, it made it and now it’s functional!”
All these gave me the opportunity to get in touch with a world I wasn’t familiar with, the world of the old car, as in our country such vehicles had almost never cruised on the road.
In Greece there may be nothing or almost nothing related to the car construction and production, but during the past, various models have been constructed, such as the original Helios car constructed by Antonis Volanis in 1981 in terms of a study in aerodynamics and it was officially presented in the Geneva exhibition two years later.
In 1984 in the International Car Exhibition in Paris, there was presented another concept “by Volanis” next to the original Helios: Apollon. Its originality, its unsurpassed aerodynamics with adjustable air suspension according to the speed. Four single seats in the interior, information was given by two Thomson screens and orders for each function were given by remote control. Apollon had incorporated economic function, which was required since that time.
Maserati collection occupies an impressive and prominent position with “Maserati 3500 GT by Touring” stealing the show, with construction year 1962, and it reached top speed 230 km/hour and 0-100 km/hour in approximately 8 seconds, really impressive performance for that time!
“Maserati Mistral 4 Litre Coupet” is also a special exhibit (construction year 1966) which was lying abandoned, with Italian car plates, in the 1970s on Eleftheriou Venizelou street in Nea Smyrni, on the borders with Palaio Faliro. A similar Mistral was also owned in Greece by one of the sons of the King of Saudi Arabia Ibn Saud who spent the summers of the 1960s in the hotel “Kavouri” with his family and his court.
And OF COURSE a Ferrari collection can’t be missing from a car museum!!!
The garnishes-special Museum’s assets which must be proud of are, in my opinion, the following:
“1937 Chrysler Royal Police Car”
Chrysler Royal participated in Marvel Studio films, initially as an escort car and afterwards as a patrol car. Nowadays, it stills wears the features of a patrol car with operative emergency lights and an siren.
It appropriates an originality certificate by Marvel Studio which confirms its participation in the American film “Captain America-The First Avenger”. The Hellenic Motor Museum bought the particular car at auction in Great Britain.
“Chrysler Imperial Crown Convertible”
Back in the 1930s every car industry of status used to complete the series of its models with a “Flagship” series. Ford had Lincoln, General Motors had Cadilac. Walter Chrysler presented Imperial in 1926 and reached the Imperial’s perfection in 1959. There were constructed only 555 pieces of this model in the price of 5.774 $.
Note that the particular pink car belonged to Robert Plant, leader of the famous pop group “Led Zeppelin”!
The visitor has the chance to admire more than 110 unique exhibits of the worldwide car industry. I wish I could transfer images from all the cars which are really one better than the other! Unfortunately this is not attainable, that’s why I’ll confine myself several noteworthy!
The place, in spite of its car treasures, hides great surprises, as well. The visitor can live the experience of speed driving a F1 simulator and seeing live an old car factory.
Hellenic Motor Museum, dedicated to the history of the car, is located to the centre of Athens near the National Archaeological Museum, on the meeting of Ioulianou street and 3rd September street. It belongs to Theodoros Charagionis Foundation and it opened on March 2011. It expands on three floors, of 4.000 square metres overall surface, in the Capitol artspace.
That’s all for today darlings! I wish a wonderful day everybody!
